Taking Back Sunday Lyrics

The crickets on this blog are deafeningly! Anyway, thinking of our kind and lyrically-clothed friend Angela, here are some lines to discuss, if you like. We never got to talk about lying this year, which is a philosophically fascinating 'problem' in ethics.

"Liar (It Takes One To Know One)"
All our secrets they are tailored trouble
Draped loose now around your hips
Your spotless instincts are valid
We coexist
Got 26 days to work with (got 26 days)
We got 26 days to work with (it moves, it moves, it moves)
We'll see what all gets done
I'm an addict for dramatics
I confuse the two for love
"You can't tell me that you don't beg..." Liar (liar)
If we're keeping score
We're all choir boys at best (Intrusive and arrogant) Liar (liar)
If we're keeping score
We're all choir boys at best (Intrusive and arrogant)
Got 26 days to work with (got 26 days)
Then back on that island
That you swear by
Still barely can't afford
It's still a question of
How long will this hold?
Is it any different now that we are
Don't you go there not here, not now (it moves, it moves, it moves)
Not here, not now
I'm an addict for dramatics
I confuse the two for love
You can tell me don't beg Liar (liar)
If we're keeping score
We're all choir boys at best (Intrusive and arrogant) Liar (liar)
If we're keeping score
Were all choir boys at best (Intrusive and arrogant)
We're all choir boys at bestLiar (liar)
If we're keeping score
We're all choir boys at best (Intrusive and arrogant) Liar (liar)
If we're keeping score
We're all choir boys at best (Intrusive and arrogant) Liar (liar) Liar (liar)
It takes one to know one

why people lie has always been a wonder to me. the way that some people build their lives on lies.......how do they live with that? it's a marvel to me...i know that often times they can't live with it, but what about the people who can?

In 'The Fall' Camus writes:

"Above all, don't believe your friends when they ask you to be sincere with them. They merely hope that you will encourage them in the good opinion they have of themselves by providing them with the additional assurance they will find in your promise of sincerity. How could sincerity be a condition of friendship? A liking for truth at any cost is a passion that spares nothing and that nothing resists. It's a vice, at times a comfort, or a selfishness. Therefore, if you are in that situation, don't hesitate: promise to tell the truth and then lie as best you can. You will satisfy their hidden desire and doubly prove your affection." (p82-83 in my edition)

In this passage, I think Camus is trying to encapsulate the maxim by which most modern people relate to each other, particularly their ‘friends,’ or more severely, their confidants.

I wonder if lying has a lot to do with power. If I can withhold the truth from someone, maybe even dupe them into thinking that I’m providing them with the truth, when I know in fact that I’m keeping it to myself, I *think* that I am providing myself with an advantage over them.

But from my experience, there is no way to lie, and lie well, without buying into the lie you purport, at least in part. And that in turn does a lot to disadvantage the liar, more than he or she often realizes. They may feel that lying gives them the advantage, but in lying, they corrode the container of their being that they *think* so carefully hides the truth.

What do you think motivates most people to lie?

Wild!
Mr. Bousquet, I have that exact passage copied into my journal from the first time that I read "The Fall".

I'm a pretty dishonest person. I've been working on it.

Personally, my lying has been mostly internal. It's comforting and easy. Especially when my deceitful thoughts become truth in my own head.

I woke up one night and realized how trivial my entire existence was becoming as a result of the lies I would tell myself. Now my thought process can be a bit of an argument between my sincere, bold side, and my approving side. So for me: comfort.

I've been trying to deconstruct my ideals and thoughts a lot lately in order to be a more honest person.

Bob Dylan says, "I don't know if anyone really finds discovers 'who they are', but as long as we remain in a constant state of becoming, I think we'll be alright."

Edit:
-'finds' in my last paragraph.

Double "Wild!"

That Dylan quote is... uncanny.

Recently, I've been trying to assemble some sense of a personal philosophy, and the word/concept of "becoming" has become in many ways a central idea... and then you share such an amazing quote. Thanks!!
