One thing that has never made sense to me is the prices of gas and why we just stand by and watch as they raise the prices? I mean the government has us brain washed to think that if its 2.25 per gallon then it goes down to 2.20 per gallon that that's cheap, when in reality it was originally under two dollars. Why is it that we complain about it but never do anything to change it? If everyone stopped driving for just ONE day, you would see prices of gas go way down. Now i know people have to go to work each day but why cant we take the bus or something else. Why is it that we have this need to drive Hummers or Escalades when gass prices are sky high?
What are your views on this?

90% of people with cars don't need them. I ride my bike 12 miles a day on average. It takes an hour longer to get somewhere, but so what. You feel so much closer to the earth and people on it when you are not honking your horn because you're mad you missed a red light. And pollution. Oh man. People complain about the prices of gas, but they should be using very little of it anyway. I plan on never owning a car in my life, and I don't see why/if that's too off the wall.
I completely agree. I mean we never question what the government does, even if its wrong. If half of the people that complained actually cared then we would see a difference, but people are too caught up in their on pointless lives to do anything. Now I am generalizing, some people actually do try to make a difference but it's not enough to get the attention needed to change anything. Now I'm not saying that I don't use a car because during the summer i went to my martial arts school which is in smithfield every single day except for sunday during the summer. Now that was a 12 mile ride over and back and he did that twice a day. (He being my Dad) So don't get me wrong, I'm not saying we dont need a car because we do, it's not like we can ride our bikes around when there is a foot of snow on the ground and its freezing.I'm just saying that we could cut down on the use of cars or whats wrong with buying an electric car, i know they cost alot, but the money you save on gas would compensate for that. I just think that as Americans we take what we have for granted.
Well I'm not calling motorized transportation a bad thing. Instead of every single person owning a car, we should have maybe one car per two households, and put more funds into bus systems. I'd love to have a bus system in Scituate. Oh wait, we do have one...that runs at 5 in the morning and at 5 at night. There just isn't a need to have 4 cars per household, at all. And if you live in a city, and you have a job close by, then shame on you.
Ok, i see what you're saying and i once again agree with you. i mean my neighbor alone has 5 cars because he owns a used car lot. but he uses all of those 5 cars. i mean if we never had cars to begin with then alot of things would have been different and you know what, we would still be able to function. the only reason we cant now is because we've been so dependent on cars and everything else. if anything were to be taken away from us now i dont thing we would be able to function or atleast the people that really use those resources alot wouldnt be able to. and thats pretty sad.
Alex,
I particularly like your question:
"Why is it that we complain about it but never do anything to change it?"
...and your comment:
"If half of the people that complained actually cared then we would see a difference..."
I hope that we can find some time this year in Philosophy Club to explore the dynamics of 'caring enough' to decide to act... what does it take to truly MOTIVATE someone to act... to do more than flap their lips and complain.
I know that we can motivate people by manipulating their fears (the government and advertisers are good at doing this), but what is a healthy, wholesome way to motivate people... the right way. Is it even possible?
Mr. B,
I personally don't think that it's possible. The only reason i say this is because we've done things a certian way for thousands of years now and its really never changed, the government maninpulated our fears and thoughts now the same way they did 50 years ago. People today are just too used to giving in to authority. I mean think about it, when ever something new is thought up and it gets some attention it always gets shot down because of the fear of what actually might happen. i think if we did want anything to change it wouldnt be with us it would be with the next generation of kids. Because thats what it takes, from birth the kids need to be taught to think for themselves not what the government or the press or anyone else tells them to think. It's kinda like the saying, " You can't teach an old dog new tricks. " I think in time it may be possible but what I'm afraid of is that it might be too late, we may have already dug ourselves in a whole that we can't clime out of.
