Permission to act on your beliefs

There is an controversy currently brewing in the UK, and you'll find the same essential conflict festering in other countries. The question is this: Democracies may claim to defend free thought and free speech… free belief even, but do they (governemnts) have the rightful authority to determine which of your beliefs you may act on, and which you may not?

In a letter to Prime Minister Tony Blair, the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams wrote, "The rights of conscience cannot be made subject to legislation, however well-meaning."

Do you agree or disagree with Williams’ statement?
