Thanks for joining the Scituate High School Philosophy Club!
Our next meeting will be in two weeks because the pep rally has been scheduled during Period 9 next week. Please remember to get your permission slips signed... you can return them personally to Mr. Bousquet or his mailbox... drop in to A-ll if you need another copy...
PLEASE take a few minutes to add your thoughts to this thread:
What topics/questions would you like to explore with our club this year?

This year I think I'd really like to spend some time on ethics and morality. The topic about the seriousness of life is interesting, though.
i think we should talk about how more and more people are starting to stop thinking for themselves. its becoming a real problem because when you start looking around there are so many problems that could be fixed by just a little atention.

Ethics... perhaps my most favorite branch of philosophy!
Anthony-
Your comment tugs at a question we discussed yesterday... how do you know what others are thinking... or that they're NOT thinking for themselves?
I think we should discuss true love. Love at first sight. Anything that has to do with love, and if it really truly exists
I really agree with Dylan about discussing what actually do we feel when we look at someone.
But I also would like to suggest a much broader topic like Human Nature-why we act the way we act or why we cope with certain people certain ways and also a very controversial one that famous people like Locke and Hobbes have discussed-are people naturally evil, or good?
what do you think?
I am so done with both of those guys. Well, no, but in addition to older philosophers, I think we should also devote some time to exploring more contemporary names in philosophy and seeing what they have to think, since it might be easier to directly connect their ideas with out world.
I've been wondering if the Star Trek episode we're watching is too far removed from the culture/media that engages our present club's demographic... and if a 90's TV show is too old, dare we say Locke and Hobbes are ancient?
It seems that the essence of most philosophical work is timeless, but the means and media by which the essence is expressed grows old and out-of-reach for many.
I hope we can find a way to productively blend the old and new... but how best to do that, I'm not sure.
During our next meeting, I hope to share a thought experiment from John R. Searle, a philsopher who is... can you believe it... STILL ALIVE... he was born in 1932... can't get much more current than that :)
Looks like we essentially have four suggested topics so far:
1. Ethics
2. Activism
3. Human Nature
4. True Love
Please feel free to revise/clarify one of these suggestions, add another suggested topic/question to this list, or VOTE for your preference...
I vote "True Love"
Human Nature is a wonderful topic and technically Love is a form of human nature...They're connected and I've always wondered why certain people are attracted to certain people.
