This I Believe (In?)

After our analysis of the potential/practical semiotic difference between "I believe _____" and "I believe in _____," we listened to and read Holly Dunsworth’s essay: I Am Evolution.

In her essay, Holly shuns the ‘I believe in’ version of belief which she claims "takes faith, trust, effort, strength," and "also implies hope." Instead, she poses her essay, beliefs, ultimate question, and life-itself in a past-oriented rather than future-oriented way, in a way that she considers to be "not at all like a traditional religious one." At the conclusion of the discussion, I asked about the orientation of Holly’s "ultimate question" which is: "Where did I come from and how?"

How do you orient your questions, beliefs, and life? Do you simply "believe" or do you "believe in"... and is there a real difference?
