VOTE: First Topic of the 2007-8 School Year

I apologize for the hurried manner of our discussion today... Here are the three categories we settled on:

1. Metaphysics: Explore the underlying framework of existence. A possible subtopic would be "fate".

2. Ethics: Explore the sources of ethical systems of belief... why we hold certain beliefs about morality... from where do these beliefs originate?

3. Epistemology: How do you really know... if you love someone... if someone loves you? What is the evidence/psychology that leads you to "know" such a thing?

VOTING RULES: Vote once... include your first name and the initial of your last name... vote "1", "2", OR "3". You're welcome to offer an argument/case for your selection in the hopes that you may influence other members to vote similarly... Votes will be tallied on Sunday morning (10-28-07) at 6am... this deadline exists because I need several days to research and prepare material for our next meeting. THANKS!

PS: At the end of today's meeting, Lindsay B asked if we could explore aesthetics, specifically in music... so I advised her to start a new discussion thread here on the blog... all registered members can start new threads/discussions at ANY TIME... no need to wait for Period 9's!

2, y'all. Caitlyn H.

I personally think that knowing about ethics will make it easier to navigate the decisions made in the world and decide what is right, making it easier to find issues to care about.

believe it or not.

I've thought it over and ethics seems like the best topic to start out the year. Besides, I've always wanted to know what is right and what is wrong and who decides both of them...

We have a whole year to discuss human nature and true love.

We need to understand what we believe and why before we begin to discuss other topics that will be based on them.

The argument of what determines right and wrong is based on the argument of absolute truth vs. realitivism and unless we want countless circular arguments and inconclusive discussions for the rest of the year we should definitely start with this topic.

Asking where beliefs originate is always fun....

Looks like the 2's have it... Ethics it is! See ya'll on Thursday :)

In the meantime, if Dylan, Lindsey B. or anyone else wants to explore other topics, you're welcome to start new threads on this blog... often the best discussions in this club happen outside of Period 9!
