An Apprenticeship of Freedom

From The Ethics of Ambiguity (p37):
Even today in western countries, among women who have not had in their work an apprenticeship of freedom, there are still many who take shelter in the shadow of men...

I really like that image "apprenticeship of freedom" and I'm wondering if someone were apprenticed to me (as in medieval times) and I was responsible for training them in 'freedom'... how exactly would I do it?

How would YOU train a protégé to be free?

(I know an easy answer is that you can't... but I'm hopeful that some of you could offer some creative, philosophical approaches to this question. Whatchya got?)
